The Independence House B & B is a historic, post-Civil War Capitol Hill Rowhouse. The two-story brick home was built in 1871 and occupied by the builder's family until the 1930s. Today, it’s a welcoming Washington DC bed and breakfast on Capitol Hill with a room perfect for two travelers. Inside Independence House, you’ll find original wood floors, locally sourced paintings by Capitol Hill artists, antique crystal chandeliers, and an impressive collection of nineteenth century rugs from all over the world.
Of course, the B & B is outfitted with modern conveniences including cable TV, WiFi, and air conditioning. The large guest room is on the second floor and features a Queen-size bed, private sitting room, desk, and a private hall bath. Guests are provided with a continental breakfast daily.
Your hostess is a nationally recognized educator and consultant who has spent 35 years working in education, administration, and staff development. Her past professional experience includes campaign organizing at the state and national level, as well as real estate management. She holds a Masters degree from George Washington University and is listed in the Who's Who in America 2000. A tenured resident of the Independence House since 1971, she is the third owner of this lovely home.
The Independence House is located in the chic Capitol Hill neighborhood and is close to two Metro stations (Eastern Market & Capitol South) serving the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines. In addition, there are several Capital Bikeshare stations nearby and guests can also choose to use Uber, ZipCar and Car2go.
The bed and breakfast is within walking distance of Capitol Hill’s top attractions, such as the U.S. Capitol, Eastern Market, the Library of Congress, U.S. Supreme Court, the National Mall, Historic Monuments and Museums and many more!
Additionally, this neighborhood offers a wide variety of fabulous restaurants within walking distance, including but not limited to Acqua Al 2, We the Pizza, Montmartre and the famed Eastern Market itself, a premier food and arts market.
Reservations and Arrivals
Rates are seasonal with spring and fall being peak seasons for our area. There is a two-night minimum stay required. If you are driving to DC and require parking, the owner can provide an on-street parking permit at no additional charge. All of our properties are smoke free and although we love them, unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate guest pets.
