 A Home with a Past:

The Independence House Bed and Breakfast is an historic, post civil war Capitol Hill row house. The two-story brick home was built in 1871 and occupied by the builder's family until the 1930s. During the 30s the home was divided into three units, then reconverted back to a single family dwelling following WWII. The downstairs features antique crystal chandeliers, original wood floors and original paintings by local Capitol Hill artists. The second floor includes the owner's suite, and the guest accommodations: a large bedroom with a queen bed; private sitting room; and private hall bath. The guest room also includes Wireless Internet and TV with cable.

Private Home Resident:

Your hostess is a nationally recognized educator and consultant who's spent 35 years working in education, administration and staff development. Currently, she is a staff development consultant. Her past professional experience includes campaign organizing at the state and national level as well as real estate management. She holds a Masters degree from George Washington University, and is listed in the Who's Who in America 2000. A tenured resident of the Independence House since 1971, she is the third owner of this lovely home.

Fantastic Eastern Market Location:

Independence House is located in the Capitol Hill Historic District, at 5th and Independence Ave SE. Its location is described as "close in" to the U.S. Capitol (5 blocks) and a "good location" near Eastern Market (2 blocks). The Library of Congress buildings are a 2-4 block walk as are the Folger Shakespeare Library and Theatre, U.S. Supreme Court, Eastern Market (and its Metro stop), and numerous restaurants, boutiques and small businesses catering to nearby federal workers. The neighborhood is nestled in the shadows of the Capitol with excellent public transportation available. Guests enjoy walks along tree-lined streets with beautiful town homes and a small town atmosphere. Jog west on Independence Avenue past the Capitol and along the National Mall to the Smithsonian and numerous other museums, as well as the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and the Washington Monument among other sights.

Personal Guests:

Inside Independence House, enjoy the owner's collection of nineteenth century rugs from all over the world. These are offset by modern room conveniences: tub and shower, private phone/answering machine, cable TV/VCR, WiFi high-speed Internet access, and air conditioning. There is just one guest room, furnished with a queen-size bed and a private hallway bath. An attached private sitting room with writing desk and sofa. Guests enjoy a continental breakfast each morning.

Please Note:  If you arrive by car, be aware that during the week you must park in a commercial garage (the nearest being at Union Station) for about $20/day.  Non-residents may only park on the streets from 6pm Saturday until 7am Monday.  Regretfully, we cannot accommodate children or pets.  Smoking is not permitted.

Weekday arrivals in most cases must be after 2pm, by appointment. Once guests are checked in, they are free to come and go as they wish.
