Guest Quarters on Capitol Hill is a self-hosted, spacious one-bedroom apartment ideal for a couple, small family or business traveler visiting Washington, DC. Located at 5th and E Street NE, just East of Union Station, visitors will find they are perfectly located for the best Washington has to offer, whether for sightseeing or business destinations. Walk to the National Mall; Smithsonian Museums; Library of Congress; Supreme Court; or U.S. Senators' offices in the Dirkson, Hart and Russell buildings. Likewise, a short-10 minute walk will take you to Washington's subway system, the Metro. Just walk four blocks to Union Station, where you can catch the Red Line; from there you can connect to the rest of the system and virtually anywhere in DC.
The private entrance of this apartment opens into the large, comfortable living room. Special features include: a large sofa; decorative fireplace; TV with cable and DVD player; wireless Internet; small stereo/CD player; and a library of local tourism information, books, magazines, movies and games. The living room sofa opens to a queen-size bed featuring the new Aerobed style mattress. This sofa bed is much more comfortable than a traditional sleeper sofa with the dreaded bar under a thin mattress. There is also a nice, bright dining area with a bay window.
The kitchen is situated between the bed- and living rooms, and is equipped with modern, full-size appliances, including: refrigerator, gas stove/oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. The apartment is supplied with dishes, glassware, cutlery, and pots and pans for easy meal preparation and dining. A utility closet off the kitchen includes a stacking washer/dryer and an ironing board with iron.
The bedroom is at the back of the apartment and is furnished with a queen-size bed, bureau and two nightstands. There, you'll be pleased to find an architectural detail common in Washington's early 20th century row houses: an interior "light well," which allows natural light to reach the back of the unit. The full bath is off the bedroom and includes a traditional tub and massage shower-head. If you are traveling with an infant, a portable crib can be provided on request. Guests arriving by car to Washington, can park on street with permit the owner can secure for you. There is no charge for the permit.
Your hosts, who make their home upstairs in the main part of the house, have been in this 1903 Victorian for nearly 30 years. The hostess, a native Washingtonian, is a writer/editor who is always up on what’s happening in the city, and is pleased to share her knowledge with guests. The host, originally from St. Louis, Missouri, is retired from both the Environmental Protection Agency and the faculty of American University. Come be their guests in this comfortable English basement apartment.
