The hosts of this one-of-a-kind home in Bethesda offer a single guestroom, with working gas fireplace, and a private, full bath with marble counter tops. The bedroom has a queen-size bed, dresser, telephone, TV with cable, Verizon Fios High Speed Wireless Internet and a lovely view from its top floor perch. Guests are welcome to join the owners in the family room and kitchen/breakfast area, and to use the front or back porches and back yard which boasts a hot tub, fire pit, and lounges.

The home is just over the DC/Maryland border in Glen Echo Heights, a hilly, woodsy area near the Potomac River. The owners' vision was to build a home with authentic, turn-of-the-last-century craftsmanship (c. 1900), while updating it with today's amenities. The house features large porches, high ceilings, plaster crown moldings, stained-glass skylights and transoms, pocket doors, piano curves, eyebrow dormers, curved bays, a covered panel passageway, a turning central stairway and atrium, and a large circular turret with a delightful bell-shaped roof.

Look more closely and you'll see the owners’ large collection of period artifacts being put back into use here, including: four fireplace mantels; a houseful of antique light fixtures; salvaged front doors with original hardware; a pair of cypress craftsman columns; countless antique porcelain doorknobs; an enormous oval pedestal sink; a six-foot curved Art Deco bathtub; antique hearth tiles; and a truckload of salvaged, quarter-sawn heart pine flooring from New Orleans. And on the walls, are the "affiches"-- the owners' collection of antique posters.

The Accommodations:

Des Affiches offers a single, top floor guest room, furnished with a Queen-size bed and premium linens. The room includes a working gas fireplace, color television with cable, telephone extension and private hall bath featuring marble counter tops. In addition to the beautiful, carved staircase, there is elevator access to the floor as well. The house and guest accommodations can be accessed without using a single step.

Your Hosts:

The hosts are originally from Chicago and New York. She is an attorney, who now owns a legal placement service after a career as a Hill staffer, lobbyist, local elected official and PBS attorney. She is fluent in Spanish and French. Their daughter speaks some Hebrew and is learning French.

He is an executive with an IT/Telecom solutions company. Two loving and playful cats also call the house home. For guest comfort, both cats are not allowed access to the guest room.

Location:

The home is located in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC. Off street parking is provided at no charge. Access to public transportation is close by but requires a couple of transfers to reach the downtown area of Washington. Guests can walk a short distance to catch a Maryland bus, which connects with Washington buses or the Metro system at the Friendship Heights station on the Red Line. Visitors with a car will find it very easy to get to the National Institutes of Health, National Naval Medical Center, American University, Georgetown University and Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital, Georgetown, and downtown Bethesda itself. Traveling by car to downtown DC is easy, but in most cases would require parking in a commercial garage.
